Kicking Through Time: The Forgotten Warrior Queen of Korean Martial Arts

With Mother’s Day approaching, I wanted to focus on a specific inspiration for all martial artists.

When people think of martial arts legends, they often picture strong, stoic male warriors in ancient armor. But did you know Korea once had a martial arts-practicing queen who defended her people with strategy, strength, and spirit? Today’s post dives into the story of Queen Seondeok, her connection to early martial ideals, and how her legacy still inspires modern Taekwondo practitioners, especially strong, disciplined leaders of all ages and genders.

Meet Queen Seondeok: Korea’s Warrior Queen

Queen Seondeok ruled the ancient Korean kingdom of Silla in the 7th century. Though not a fighter in the ring, she was a powerful tactician, known for her sharp mind, peaceful diplomacy, and promotion of martial discipline among her warriors.

She was a supporter of Hwarang, the elite youth warrior class of Silla, believed by many historians to be a precursor to modern Taekwondo’s ethical and technical roots. The Hwarang trained in swordsmanship, archery, horseback riding, annd unarmed combat… all while living by a code of honor remarkably similar to the Taekwondo tenets we follow today.

Kukkiwon Insight: Kukkiwon historians often cite the Hwarang’s influence on Taekwondo’s values (courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, and indomitable spirit) as a cornerstone of Korean martial arts identity.

Modern Takeaway: Channeling the Queen’s Spirit

Here’s what Queen Seondeok can still teach us:

Lead with wisdom. Whether you’re a black belt or a white belt, your mindset matters more than your rank.

Train your mind like your body. She was known to outsmart invading forces with clever tactics. In Taekwondo, your mental focus can be your greatest weapon.

Lift others up. Queen Seondeok raised the status of women, scholars, and warriors. As martial artists, we can elevate others through teaching, kindness, and respect.

Taekwondo Class Challenge: Warrior Queen Workout

Want to honor her legacy? Try this short, powerful circuit inspired by mental and physical agility:

• 30 seconds shadow kicks (speed over height)

• 15 seconds balance hold (crane stance)

• 30 seconds front stance + punch combo

• 10 deep, focused breaths in horse stance

Repeat twice. Focus not just on strength, but on presence and poise.

Reflection Question:

How can you lead like Queen Seondeok in your own Taekwondo journey both on and off the mat?

The spirit of martial arts isn’t just about kicks and forms, it’s also about who you choose to be. Queen Seondeok may not have worn a dobok, but her leadership, discipline, and courage make her a martial artist in spirit. So next time you bow in, remember: history is full of warriors who led with heart, and now it’s your turn.
